The Madwoman of Chaillot
Upper School Fall Play
November 2-4, 2017
This November, Upper School actors and stage technicians presented a new production of Jean Giraudoux's The Madwoman of Chaillot, adapted by Maurice Valency. In 1940s Paris, a group of capitalists undertakes a plan to drill for oil beneath the streets of Paris, believing a Prospector who claims that he has sniffed out a profitable source of petroleum. The area where they wish to drill is dominated by a cafe frequented by a group of "outsiders" and misfits, who are led by Countess Aurelia, the madwoman of the title. When she hears of this plot, she arranges a 'trial" of the wicked of the world, presided over by another "madwoman," the Countess Josephine. The wicked are condemned, their fate is sealed, and joy, justice, and light return to the world.
The cast was led by Delilah '18 as The Countess Aurelia, Dylan '20 as The Prospector, and Carden '18 as The Ragpicker — alongside a large company of actors from across the Upper School. Original music was written and performed by Jonah '19. Directed by Ali Boag.
