Know Your Pelicans - Colin Levitt

#KnowYourPelicans: Colin Levitt

Middle School Math Teacher

What is your favorite thing about Packer?

My two favorite aspects of Packer are the strong sense of community that is felt within these walls and also the emphasis on non-academics (diversity and equity work, community service, speaking confidently, learning from mistakes...). I believe Packer does a great job in taking care of children. Though the academic program is at the forefront, these essential characteristics of our school make us unique. It's why I'm proud to send my 1st Grader here.

Describe a favorite or memorable moment in your classroom at Packer.

Teaching Middle School math, I could describe many times when there were important mathematical discoveries in my class. I could share responses from my students that were super thoughtful and impressive. However, what sticks out in my mind is the consistent ability for students to think deeply and share their ideas. There's a feeling of "we're in this together." There's a natural and comfortable way that our students work with each other that really adds to the learning environment.

Name a book/artwork/piece of music that changed your life and explain how.

I'd say that experiences have impacted my life more than a singular book or piece of music or art. These experiences — including teaching in a school with underprivileged students, along with teaching in Greece for two years — have shaped who I am and how I teach. My desire to learn about other cultures and people drives me.

What is something that most Packer people wouldn't know about you?

This is a tough one. I'm honest with my students and share with them often. My students know about my family, teaching history, and my interests. I have two sons, ages 4 and 6, and I love sports. Though I enjoy coaching and getting to know kids outside of the classroom, playing basketball brings me a lot of joy. I look forward to reclaiming victory for the faculty against the seniors this year!
