May Day 2016

Core Values Come to Life

The 2016 May Day performance honored and celebrated Packer's Core Values: Scholarship, Creativity, Integrity, Diversity, Respect and Joy. Audio recordings by students and alumni (excerpted below) offered reflections on how these values have been felt in their experiences at Packer. Dances included a tribute to Prince and David Bowie, as well as choreography by members of Packer's faculty and staff. Dance teacher Alicia White and music teacher Pam Cibrano directed the Lower School performers. The 6th Grade opened the event with the Maypole Dance, which has been performed at Packer continually for over a century.

"On that momentous afternoon, classes from the entire school filed out and congregated in the garden to witness the event. May Day was the one day during the year when we were able to walk and dance on the beautifully manicured garden lawn. I remember with warm fondness and great pride that my mother attended along with other parents who were available. What a special day!"

"I'm a very diverse person, my family structure isn't exactly the norm, I have been confused for a boy too many times to count...But at Packer I am accepted for my differences, loved for my differences...Even if Packer at times is a "normal" school, everyone respects diversity."

"Packer has been a part of my family, my whole life. Our children are 3rd generation here. I love this school immensely and how it has played a huge role in making me who I am today. Most importantly I love the friendships I have made here that have lasted my lifetime. There's a growing number of alumni parents here today that no doubt share this same experience."

"On Integrity: Packer Collegiate Institute inspired and encouraged me to be engaged within the student body and beyond myself... My teachers challenged me to take personal responsibility to another level. I answered that challenge... [first] through cultural leadership and eventually student body leadership. These experiences took me far and led me back here fairly quickly... Packer's core value of integrity and cultivating personal responsibility created the bridge for me to find my passions and then cross back over and use them."

"I'm very proud to be here at Packer. When I think of Packer's core values I think most about joy. It's amazing how happy everyone is here. This year I did the school musical, and it was probably the best thing I've ever done. .... It's different than playing on a sports team, I've never felt the way I've felt by winning a baseball game or scoring a game winning soccer goal. It's different in a way I can't even describe. Doing the musical was one of the best choices of my life and I wouldn't have done anything differently."
