#KnowYourPelicans: Sheila Bogan
Director of Middle and Upper School Admissions and Financial Aid
As Director of Middle and Upper School Admissions and Financial Aid, what do you do for Packer?
In the fall, I interview prospective families, host open house events, and have a lot of contact with schools throughout the city (and New Jersey!). In January, I read applicant files and meet with the Admissions committee to go over these files and begin to construct a class. After students are accepted, our office hosts Accepted Students Days when the kids can spend a day on campus and in our classrooms before making a decision. I also assist returning and new families who apply for tuition assistance. After spring break I help plan orientations for new students and placement exams.
Tell us about a specific time you found your job especially rewarding?
I am especially lucky in my job that I feel rewarded all of the time! I love when you take a chance on a student and then see them flourish here. I take great pride when the kids that we accept into this community make a major impact, whether it is presenting their findings from years of research in the Science Research Program or choreographing a piece in the Dance Concert.
What is something that most Packer people wouldn't know about you?
Most people wouldn't know that I grew up on government assistance with a single mom and twin brother. I attended local public schools and was the first person in my family to attend college, and the only person in my family to earn an advanced degree.
What is your favorite space in the building?
I am in the Admissions Office most of the time, which is beautiful. However, when I do get out, I really love the art studio — so colorful and vibrant. I love how messy it can get and how the natural light comes through.
I also love the busyness of the Student Center (see photo). I know, I know... it's packed, but I love the vibe of the kids laughing and interacting in that space.
