Advanced Robotics Club

Advanced robotics is offered to fourth graders who have either previously taken robotics, or to less experienced students who have a curiosity for building and programming. Students will use Lego Mindstorms EV3 robots to practice and hone programming skills and they will have daily opportunities to investigate a variety of challenges. As a group we will create projects based on the specific interests of the group; In previous years this has taken the form of “Battle Bots,” or a Robot Olympics. This is a fun group involving plenty of team-work, creativity and problem solving. Time to think outside the box!

Mini Musical: Under the Sea

Learn to speak mermaid/merman as you swim and play with your family under the sea. Make a trade for legs with the Sea Witch for a special skill that only you possess. Play an exciting game of Ocean Tag – and careful not to get turned into a statue! Dance at the ball on your new found legs and sing such classics as “Under the Sea”, and “Part of Your World”.

Mad Science - Secrets, Spies and Spaceships

Step into the shoes of a detective and uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. You will probe the science of tracking as you stamp out scenarios and uncover codes in this session. Then, from our earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, join us on a quest for exploration! Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight and the challenges of space travel.

Packer Girls Chess Club

This class is for all girls at Packer who want to learn chess and practice with their peers. We will cover/review the basics, delve into strategic and tactical patterns, and analyze top-level games by Grandmasters from around the world. Members of the class will also learn the history of women in chess - we will also invite several strong female chess players for the girls to meet in class!

Robotics Club

TUESDAY

Advanced Chess

This class is ideal for students who have experience with chess and would like to join the Packer Chess Team in competitions. A prerequisite of tactics, openings, and endgames is essential—most students already even have official US Chess ratings. Each week, Coach Levy leads a detailed mini-lesson on various advanced concepts, after which the students play with notation and/or clocks for the remaining 30 minutes. Optional homework will be assigned each week.

Adventures in Animation Film

In this Animation-maker class, children explore their creativity as they learn and utilize a variety of materials to create props, characters and mini movie sets for their animated films. Children will take their animations to the next level as they add sound effects, and even create music for their movies! Participants will make several short animations and one longer movie.

Knockout Knitting

Knitting has been proven to be a peaceful, cathartic, and soothing activity. Additionally, creating a useful piece all on one’s own is extremely rewarding and fun! This class, offered for grades 2 through 4, will cover the basic stitches (knit, purl, cast on and cast off) with the goal of completing a scarf by the end of the class. Knitting needles and yarn will be provided. All experience levels are welcome!

KING Soccer

KING Soccers main focus is to provide a fun learning environment in which every child is able to leave a better soccer player than they came in. The classes will be organized in a progression from basic dribbling and passing skills, to more advanced defensive and offensive skills. Techie Tuesday

Calling all techies! Students in grades 1- 4 are invited to take a dive into coding, robotics and Makerspace technology through exciting hands-on tech projects. Techies will build and program robots with Lego WeDo 2.0, create wearables with sewable circuits, and bring their imagination to life using Tinkercad and 3D printing, along with many other projects. This course will help students explore new tools and concepts in engaging and meaningful ways.

Wearable Technology: Fashion, Function and Fractals

In this exciting class; fashion, technology, and textile skills collide in a Project Runway meets Hackathon extravaganza. This intensive and innovative program for youth combines the latest fashion industry-specific information and technology with traditional textile craft making to encourage a well-rounded enrichment experience. Participants will experience project-based learning in textile construction techniques, draping, illustration, knitting, dyeing, computer-aided design, and textile engineering. Students apply cross-discipline craftsmanship and put on an end-of-session fashion show to exhibit their new creations.

Animation and Coding
Students will start with a completely static scene and bring it to life using animation. This animation course is a unique opportunity for young students to learn animation in an exciting, meaningful way. They will not only come away with an impressive project, but also with a foundational knowledge of a professional skill. Students will also explore different educational coding app, which are designed to give younger children an introduction to programming concepts and problem solving. Children will gain early experience of coding and programming concepts and skills in a fun and engaging way and learn the need for precise and accurate programming, the importance of correctly ordered sequential instructions, and forward planning to solve a given problem.

Drone Technology - Mini-QuadCopter Build

Learn to design, build and fly your very own drone! In this exciting, hands on class, you will
learn about the design, fabrication, and safe operation of drones by building their very own
mini-quadcopter, which is a fully functional drone You will learn how to solder and identify key electronic and mechanical components, as well as how to troubleshoot and repair your build, as necessary. At the end of the program, you will have a fully functional Mini Quadcopter to FLY home!

Dynamo Girl

Dynamo Girl’s mission is to build girls’ self-esteem through sports and physical actvity. We teach girls fundamental sports skills in a fun and joyful environment, as well as providing opportunities for building teamwork, communication and problem solving abilities. Karate

Karate helps students build focus, self-esteem, and social and leadership skills. Children learn in a
traditional environment that emphasizes respect for themselves and for others. The Fitness for Focus

Mandarin Level 2
In this class, students with one or more year experience in Mandarin will learn basic grammar and continue to build on the foundations from Mandarin Level 1 by learning more conversation and vocabulary. Beginners Chess

We welcome all students to take their first step to Grandmaster! Coaches Tony and Tommy will teach the building blocks of chess and introduce students to basic checkmates. All students will play one supervised game of chess each week, learning as they go. Students will also meet members of Packer's Chess Team, the Pelikings, to receive mentorship from their older classmates and learn more about competitive chess.

First Lego League Junior

Get pumped and join in the LEGO fun with the FIRST LEGO League Junior AQUA ADVENTURE Challenge! You’ll explore science, engineering, and robotics to help find out where the water you use in your daily life comes from, and what happens on its way to you. You’ll build LEGO robotic models of your Aqua Adventure research and will share it with others at a FIRST LEGO League Junior Expo.

Intermediate Chess

Intermediate Chess is ideal for students who have mastered the basics of Beginner Chess and are ready to expand their "chessentials" toolbox. Coaches Levy and Alexis will lead lessons on various topics each week, helping students develop their spatial awareness, board geometry, and critical thinking process. Students in this class will learn notation and how to play with a chess clock, so that they can be ready for chess competitions and be ready for joining the Packer Chess Team if they want to!

FRIDAY

Creative Filmmaking

In this class, children are encouraged to stretch their imagination and explore the technical art of filmmaking. From script writing and acting to cinematography and video editing, our little move-makers work together to make several short films. Kids will use green screens to make GIFS, put on special effects make-up for silent films, make several short tester movies and create a longer film together!

Swim Club

Packer Plus Swim Club is designed for intermediate and advanced swimmers in grades 2 thru 6. Swimmers must be able to perform freestyle w/side breathing and elementary backstroke for 12 1/2 yards. Lessons expand and focus on fine tuning freestyle and backstroke technique, stream lining, flip turns, diving from the block, and learning breaststroke and dolphin kick. The aquatics facility at St. Francis College is top of the line, and an qualified and dedicated instructor will provide stroke improvement and technique focused lessons. Swim caps and goggles are required. Swimmers must be able to perform freestyle with side breathing and elementary backstroke for 12 1/2 yards.

Swimming
The aquatics facility at St. Francis College is top of the line, and instructors will be in the pool with students to provide them with swim lessons based on ability, and students will be able to enjoy free swim as well. Lifeguards will also be available. Packer after school staff, along with a St. Francis swimming coach, will escort students to and from the pool each Friday.

Please keep in mind that the lessons provided are basic and for novice swimmers. The emphasis of this class is on play and allowing children to feel comfortable in the water. A swim cap is recommended.

Tournament Chess

Calling all students in 4th Grade and up: This is the class to either start your chess journey or continue honing your skills against strong classmates. Coach Levy will lead a lesson each week, which will be followed by practice games. Students will learn about the US Chess Federation and have the option of competing in chess tournaments.

Wild World of Sports

Wild World of Sports is a fun and exciting way for children to learn the fundamentals of 4 of Americas favourite sports. Dribbling, passing, shooting, hitting and hand-eye coordination are just some of the skills we will develop as we introduce flag football, lacrosse, basketball and baseball throughout the semester.

We will be running post routes, hunting the pill, perfecting the fade away and crushing home runs with Kids in the Game and their coaches.

During inclement weather, class will be held in the North Hall or, if available, the gym. Appropriate attire recommended.
