Continuing the Conversation: White Fragility

Upper School students Zoe S. ’21 and Millie H. ’21 facilitated today's "Continuing the Conversation" discussion on white fragility. The questions, definitions, and personal shares from students and faculty enhanced the conversation.

You can view the short video we watched and read two articles related to today’s conversation: “How to Talk to Your Family About Racism on Thanksgiving”  and “White People Can Hold Each Other Accountable to Stop Institutional Racism.”

As we move forward, we hope that community members will:

  • Examine how race is discussed in classes, in the Student Center, and in our households.
  • Reflect on why white people shut down in conversations about racial issues.
  • Consider ways to address racial stress when engaged in conversations about racial issues.
  • Learn how to name and manage white fragility.

Special Acknowledgement

On behalf of our entire community, we want to extend gratitude to Leila N. ’20 for creating the “Continuing the Conversation” discussion spaces. Her vision, energy, and desire to make our interactions with complicated topics more accessible and personal is appreciated. Packer is becoming a more aware and equitable community as a result of her leadership.

We look forward to continuing the conversations with others as they generate topics and lead future CCEs!
