Packer is participating in Computer Science Education Week, a national advocacy program created to bring computing education to students in K-12 schools. Beginning on December 3, students, teachers, and parents at Packer have the opportunity to see how computing works and is applied in different settings, and to discuss the impact of technology on society.
Packer’s participation in CS Ed Week is evident as soon as one enters the front doors. A display in the lobby challenges students to decode a secret message by converting binary numbers to decimal numbers and decimal numbers into characters on a keyboard. Also featured is a diverse selection of computer scientists: Alan Turing, Grace Hopper, Ada Lovelace, and Katherine Johnson.
Throughout with week, special guests—including creative technologist Ari Melenciano, programmer Amy Wibowo, and New York University professor Dan Shiffman as well as Packer parents Paul Hurley, Jess Hunt and Peter Stern—are meeting with students, faculty and staff. In addition there will be several cross-divisional student collaborations.
Packer’s Computer Science Education Week was organized by faculty members Sanjana Assudani, Greg Benedis-Grab, Meghan Clark, Tom James, Saber Khan, and Louis Minsky.
