Accounts Payable and Purchasing Manager
As Accounts Payable and Purchasing Manager, what do you do for Packer?
I manage the procurement process related to everything the school purchases. I ensure timely processing of orders and payments of invoices. I also maintain some of our relationships with vendors, and work closely with division and department heads, managing their yearly allocated budgets. Lastly, I assist with audit work on a continual basis as needed. I also coach Middle School basketball.
Tell us about a specific time you found your job especially rewarding.
It is hard to pick just one specific time, but as a Middle School Basketball Coach, I was overjoyed when the 7/8th Grade Boys Basketball Team, which had been 0 and 5, won their final game of the season on a step-back, buzzer-beating three-point shot, after a late-game comeback. We all rushed the court in celebration, but what made this moment even more rewarding was who had hit the game winning shot.
Just one day prior, towards the end of an early morning practice, a player on the bench hung his head and said something about entering high school the following year without ever winning a Middle School basketball game.
He's the person who hit the shot, and as a coach I could not have been happier. It was a great ending and beginning, following a turbulent few years, for such a great group of young men.
What is something that most Packer people wouldn't know about you?
My mother migrated to Brooklyn in the early 80's from the small island named Grenada, located in the Lesser Antilles. After meeting my father at City College, she had me some years later. Growing up I was fortunate enough to spend my summers in beautiful Grenada, where I developed many loves, but most of all, my love for soccer. Soccer has taken me to places and tournaments all across the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. To name a few places, I've played against professionals in Trinidad, Norway, and Italy. I've also played many positions, ranging from goalkeeper to forward.
As a forward, the most memorable goal I've ever scored came in the second half of a tied game, when I trapped the ball using my thigh and volleyed it into the net, past the goalkeeper, on a field engulfed by the Swiss Alps. We went on to win that game. I was named the "Man of the Match" and I couldn't have been prouder.
What is your favorite space in the building?
On a warm, sunny day, the Garden is my favorite space in the building. Standing on the red bricks, towards the back of the Garden, facing the school, there's an amazing panoramic view of Packer that includes the Middle School building, the Atrium, the main building and the Imagination Station.
Also, everyone passes through this beautiful space at some point during their Packer career. From fire drills, to Playgroup, to May Day, to Middle School Moving Up Day and campus visits, it's a space that's well known and loved. Finally, the luckiest have the honor, pleasure, and privilege of sitting through Commencement, the culmination of their Packer career.
