On View in the Carol Shen Gallery: "The Evolution of Nature" | February 2023

"The Evolution of Nature" celebrates five extraordinary sculptors—Peter Lundberg, Issac Duncan III, Cal Lane, Aisha Tandiwe Bell, and Kathryn Siegal—whose work expresses nature as an endless continuum of inspiration. Nature can be reproduced in so many unique and different ways.

This gallery was curated for students to be inspired by and to learn from its curated work. Each piece begs its observer to consider, "How can we stop and think about nature in a way that's different—that gets us to connect with the earth and the ground?"

Curated by Caroline Holder, Elizabeth Eagle, and John Clement

Learn more about each artist and their work:

"I am intrigued by our desire to change living in conflict with our compulsion to consume everything." Aisha Tandiwe Bell

"With the acceptance that an inanimate object, which looks nothing like one is accustomed to, one opens up to the acceptance that "that which is different" is like oneself." Issac Duncan III

"I think of my sculptures as a view into my unconscious mind, a landscape of very primitive things, rudimentary elements of life, nature, science, spirituality and passion." Peter Lundberg

"I like to search out relationships between the natural world and a more personal world of human experience." Kathran Siegal

Lane's tapestries, cut into harsh and often preternaturally large steel and iron structures, are sensual, alluring and deeply effeminate. —on the work of Cal Lane
