This was most publicly evident in his response to Congressman John Lewis’s letter, ‘Together, You Can Redeem the Soul of Our Nation,’ which Shanthan shared with the Upper School in our Elections Chapel. Equally as important, Shanthan is a generous peer and collaborator, who supports and encourages his classmates’ learning as much as he expands his own.”

“Lea has impressed all of her current and former history teachers with her independence, intellect, creativity, and grace. Her ability to juxtapose the big picture with significant detail is remarkable. As a sophomore, he created a research proposal and reached out to a mentor asking to engage in this research. The mentor, who has for years refused to work with high school students, was so impressed that he couldn't say no. After only his first summer in the lab, the mentor thought of Ethan as an integral lab member working on the same level as his graduate students. He reached the national level in the JSHS competition as a junior while continuing to excel with his lab work. As a senior he made Packer history and became our first top 300 finalist in the Regeneron Student Talent Search. He also gave a talk to a professional group of peptoid researchers about the peptoid database he created that will be part of his legacy in the peptoid world. It has truly been a pleasure to watch Ethan achieve and learn so much.”

His positive attitude and excitement about all things physics is infectious! Not only has John consistently demonstrated mastery on all aspects of AT Physics, but he has taken on every optional assignment as well! In fact, John has gone far beyond expectations, often creating extension assignments for himself. In one memorable episode, John made an instructional video for 9th grade physics students in which he used a computer simulation that he created in order to show the effect of air resistance in a lab that they were working on. In another case, undeterred by the fact that he has not yet studied Calculus, he dove into the challenging work of solving a differential equation aided by a computer program he had written himself. Lastly, John’s recent investigations of the double pendulum outside of class are a testament to his curiosity and drive to explore and uncover the nature of the world around him.”
Department Award for Best All-Around Science
Recipient: Sophie Marcus-Wade ’21
Remarks: Kofi Donnelley, Science Department Head
“In her four years in the US at Packer, Sophie has managed to take eight years of science including two AT courses as well as participating the Independent Science Research program! Sophie’s incredible work ethic, perseverance and commitment to learning science is extraordinary. She gives beautiful, well-organized, thoroughly-researched presentations, and has developed an impressive degree of understanding about the parasite causing malaria through her independent science research. Her excitement and joy about learning science is palpable. Sophie was the only student in her AT Physics class who accepted the optional challenge of creating a computer model to simulate a hydrogen atom, which she was able to do successfully! Sophie also has put in the work necessary to develop excellent chemical intuition and analytical skills for approaching complex synthetic problems. Whether vigorously debating the configuration of a stereogenic center with classmates, collaborating to unravel a mechanism, or asking questions about an assignment, she is committed to grasping the details of each situation as well as the big picture.”

Remarks: Georgia Groome ’21, Upper School Student Council Representative
The health and safety of our students is paramount at all times and when faced with a pandemic, this team worked tirelessly and endlessly to keep our community informed and safe. Every day they demonstrated care, radiated positivity, and smiled through an in-depth testing program and hours spent with contact tracing. They eased our fears and concerns, were always available to answer our questions, and reassured our community that we will weather this storm together. We are beyond grateful for their love and support and it is with our utmost gratitude and appreciation we present the Florence Davis award to Packer's Health and Wellness Team.
J. Geoff Pierson Leadership Award

Remarks: Stacey Pierre-Louis, Dean of Student Life and Leadership and Community Engagement Coordinator
Recipients:
The Continuing the Conversation and Education Facilitative Team, Asian Affinity Alliance, and Behavior and Sexual Misconduct Task Force
“This year, the Continuing the Conversation* and Education Facilitative Team hosted six meetings, during a highly unusual school year with hybrid/remote learning. This includes two sessions when they consulted with student leaders from the Asian Affinity Alliance and Behavior and Sexual Misconduct Task Force to apply the successful meeting structure to their content areas.
Overall, the CCE Facilitative Team used the Zoom platform in unique ways to engage peers in a productive way. Together they helped us as we explored identifiers, in addition to the social awareness and decision making skills needed to foster healthy relationships within and around our Packer community.”
* The spaces affectionately known as CCEs were created by alumnae Leila Narrisetti ’20 and the Diversity and Equity Office as a way to engage students, school professionals and others in ongoing dialogue about topics of importance to members of the Packer community.
Stephen Manternach Award

Recipient: Hannah Will ’23
“Hannah is as talented and conscientious an athlete as I have ever met. She is committed to her running and more noticeably her teammates. She takes her training seriously and is always willing to put in whatever work is necessary to better herself. She is kind, thoughtful, polite and an absolute pleasure to coach.”

“Alex is always the first one at practice each day and he always shows up with a big smile on his face. He is willing to extend himself and help out in any way that he can; always ready to run in any race. He is the consummate team player and is always supportive of the team’s initiatives. He is a delight to work with, and his participation is appreciated by all.”
Vanguard Award
For a Senior whose commitment to diversity and equity is vital to the advancement of our community.
Remarks: Semeka Smith-Williams, Director of Diversity and Equity
Recipient: Millie Howard ’21
“Millie has had an incredible couple of years as an Upper School student and leader at Packer. Millie has a quiet brilliance about her. As an organizer of this year’s CCE (Continuing the Conversation and Education) program she has demonstrated real strength, patience and care for others during what has been a trying year for lots of reasons. She listens and observes, and when she poses questions to peers, school professionals and speakers like Schuylar Bailar during one of our most recent CCEs, she creates a brave space as they consider something in a new light. Millie uses her curiosity and understanding of the world around her as a way to help us see the need to engage in fruitful discussions. Millie also uses her skills as a debater to speak with enthusiasm and clarity. She always shows great kindness and grace. Her commitment to creating a community where people feel seen, celebrated and valued is a part of her legacy that will remain beyond this year.”
Recipient: Amadi Williams ’21
“Amadi is a pioneer on so many levels. There are some amazing moments that reflect who Amadi is as a student leader who cares about highlighting the experiences of various people both within her school and beyond Packer’s walls. In her time at Packer, Amadi’s dedication, focus, engagement and creativity have drawn people into meaningful conversations and activities that explore a range of identifiers and topics. Amadi has a way of telling a story with her art as she did with her recent installation. She has also demonstrated solid facilitation skills, like she did with PA’s All-School discussion for the MLK program and again in many of the CCE’s hosted this year. It is evident in so many ways that she was hoping to be an impactful community member in her final year at Packer. Her steadiness through conflict, her commitment to building awareness, along with her amazing artistic talent, makes her legacy undeniable.”
