Upper School Division Head

Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Upper School Division Head has direct responsibility for all activities involving students and faculty in grades 9 to 12. Specifically, s/he:

  • Serves as the educational leader of the division, responsible for all day-to-day operations
  • Maintains a highly visible presence in the daily life of the school, both in classrooms and at athletic events, music and arts performances, college nights, and whenever students and their families come together
  • Oversees and regularly evaluates the instructional program and the daily work of all divisional faculty and staff
  • Ensures the creation and implementation of a Master Schedule that maximizes the contributions of faculty and best meets the needs of all students
  • Makes recommendations to the Head of School on the hiring, retention, and assignment of divisional faculty and staff
  • Manages four grade level deans and the Dean of Student Life and Leadership
  • Organizes the Student Support team to ensure that all students’ needs are appropriately monitored and met
  • Observes and supervises teaching across all disciplines and maintains direct contact with department heads and other academic leaders
  • Works with faculty to continually enhance both the instructional and extra-curricular programs
  • Ensures the effective operation of the College Guidance Office
  • Establishes guidelines for proper student conduct and develops a disciplinary structure to ensure that rules are followed and that behavioral expectations are fairly implemented
  • Consults with teachers on curricular and instructional matters, offering appropriate advice and guidance
  • Collaborates with the Admissions Department on the evaluation of applying to the school
  • Maintains positive and direct contact with the parent body, establishing open lines of communication and developing strong, supportive relationships
  • Outwardly reflects the School’s commitment to its core values, especially diversity and equity
  • Considers the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of the school community and develops plans to meet these needs
  • Works to resolve problems and issues as they arise and keeps the Head of School well informed    
  • Develops and allocates the instructional budget within the division and monitors expenditures
  • Serves as a member of the School’s Senior Leadership Team and collaborates with administrative colleagues to create an optimal educational experience for all of the students in the School
