Pre & Lower School Division Head (2022-23 SY.)

Packer is seeking a committed educational leader who loves learning and knows how to cultivate a robust educational program for pre & lower school students with a focus on both academic and social emotional growth. The Pre & Lower School Division Head position requires expertise in pedagogy and leadership, a commitment to collaboration and problem-solving, generosity of spirit, a sense of humor and a passion for leading towards a more equitable, inclusive school community.

The Pre & Lower School Division Head reports to the Head of School and has direct responsibility for the pre & lower school program, prek3 to 4th grade. Core responsibilities are:

Leads pre & lower school program

  • Serves as the administrative leader of the division, responsible for all day-to-day operations
  • Establishes and oversees clear leadership structure, roles, and responsibilities 
  • Models cultural competence by recognizing one's own biases, actively analyzing one’s own internal belief systems and being an effective and respectful communicator
  • Helps create a learning community in which all members have a desire to inquire, evaluate, and challenge thinking
  • Develops and allocates the instructional budget within the division and monitors expenditures to maximize the use of available resources to enhance learning    
  • Oversees the creation and implementation of the schedule, to best meet the needs and abilities of students and faculty

Serves as instructional leader, promoting a strong culture of learning

  • Considers the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of the school community and develops plans to meet these needs 
  • Works with Associate Head of School, other Division Heads and teacher leaders to ensure excellent teaching and learning
  • Works with the Director of Student Support and Director of Health and Wellness to ensure that all students’ needs are appropriately monitored and met
  • Oversees and regularly evaluates the instructional and co-curricular programs and the daily work of all divisional faculty and staff
  • Observes and supervises teaching across all disciplines and maintains direct contact with department heads and other academic leaders to support professional growth and evaluation for divisional faculty 
  • Establishes guidelines for proper student conduct and ensures that behavioral expectations are fairly implemented within Packer's restorative practices framework
  • Partners with academic leaders and head of school on the hiring, retention, and assignment of divisional faculty and staff

Develops meaningful, supportive relationships among students, faculty, staff and families to promote learning

  • Develops trusting, supportive relationships with the parent body, establishing open lines of communication and ongoing partnership
  • Develops strong collegial relationships with faculty and staff, with an eye toward support and growth in service of student learning
  • Maintains a highly visible presence in the daily life of the school, both in classrooms and at community-wide events 
  • Collaborates with the Admissions Department on the pre & lower school application process 

Schoolwide leadership

  • Collaborates and contributes on strategic school-wide improvement: developing improvement goals, plans of action, implementing change, refining practice and sustaining change
  • Serves as a member of the School’s Senior Leadership Team and collaborates with administrative colleagues to create an optimal educational experience for all of the students in the School
