MS/US School Counselor (SY 2020-21)

The School Counselor serves as a student advocate who works cooperatively with other individuals and organizations to promote the development of youth and families in our community.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides Individual and small group counseling
  • Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, medical professionals, and community health personnel
  • Provides identification of and referral to qualified therapists, treatment centers and/or community agencies
  • Serves as a liaison between the school and outside agencies or mental health personnel
  • Acts as a resource for understanding adolescent development
  • Provides guidance and education to Faculty and Staff on handling disruptive or dysfunctional behaviors
  • Addresses mental health issues, such as eating disorders, attempted suicide, depression and physical and sexual abuse
  • Manages substance use and abuse issues
  • Responds to crises, including separation and loss
  • Oversees any other matters pertaining to community health
  • Attends all appropriate school meetings and events

Requirements:

  • Previous school counseling experience
  • Must be a Licensed School Counselor or hold an advanced degree in Psychology
  • Must be able to develop high levels of trust and comfort with all types of students
  • Knowledgeable about the developmental stages of teenagers
  • Previous experience working with peer counseling programs
  • Strong experience managing issues of chemical health, depression, disordered eating, sexuality, etc.
  • Familiar with strategies for dealing with learning differences, ADD and ADHD
