Athletic Director (2022-2023 SY)

We are seeking a visionary, passionate, and collaborative person to lead Packer’s dynamic athletics program for grades 5-12 starting in July 2022. The Athletic Director at Packer is a member of the senior administration, working closely with the CFO/COO, the Division Heads, the Physical Education Department Head, and the Health and Wellness team. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Athletic Director is responsible for all aspects of the department including hiring, scheduling, supervision of the athletic facilities, and transportation. The next director will have an opportunity to evaluate the program in relation to student growth and wellbeing and in the context of school goals, and then to chart a path forward for the continued success of the program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The athletic director will:

  • Develop, organize, supervise, and evaluate a developmentally appropriate program of intramural and interscholastic athletics for the entire school.
  • Ensure that all coaching positions are filled with competent and properly trained coaches.
  • Provide that all coaches perform their duties with the highest level of professionalism.
  • Collaborate with the head of school and administrative team to recruit, evaluate, and hire faculty to the athletic department.
  • Models cultural competence by recognizing one's own biases, actively analyzing one’s own internal belief systems and being an effective and respectful communicator
  • Review and revise the coaches’ manual annually.
  • Organize and coordinate the school’s intramural and competitive athletic programs.
  • Report athletic achievements to the director of communications for dissemination to the school and community at large.
  • Prepare and implement an annual departmental budget.
  • Schedule all athletic events, arrange for transportation, hire all game officials, and attend or enlist a school representative to attend all home games.
  • Represent the school at various state, regional, and national athletic associations.
  • Maintain records of team and individual athletic accomplishments for posterity.
  • Oversee the distribution, collection, storage, cleaning, and repair of all school athletic uniforms.
  • Participate in committee, department, and staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events that would benefit from your area of expertise.
  • Be involved in the school community at large.
  • Assume responsibility for other projects as assigned by the head of school.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic administration, physical education, or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of teaching and supervisory experience in physical education and/or coaching and athletic administration
  • Successful track record working with student athletes with a strong understanding of the developmental needs of both middle and high school students
  • A proven ability to foster positive leadership among student-athletes
  • Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills both verbally and written, with a professional and empathetic approach when working with all constituencies to include parents, students, colleagues, coaches, the maintenance department and many other individuals
  • Prior success at attracting, hiring, and facilitating the professional growth of excellent coaches
  • Available to work evenings and weekends
  • Excellent organizational  and time management skills
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and a commitment to DEI principles
  • Experience in and commitment to the ongoing development and maintenance of an inclusive campus community
  • Detail-oriented and able to work collaboratively
  • High-energy and enthusiastic about working in an academic atmosphere
