What work have you done prior to joining Packer?
Before joining the Packer community, I was a school leader in a progressive nursery school in Manhattan's West Village. I have also taught preschool aged children, as well as First and Second Grade, all in Manhattan independent schools.
What are your impressions of Packer? Our students? Your colleagues?
Packer has been an incredibly warm and welcoming place for me. There is support everywhere I turn and the students are not only dedicated, but also curious.
What do you teach? What is one of your favorite parts of the curriculum?
I currently teach two sections of Advanced Pre-Algebra and two sections of Algebra 1. My favorite part about teaching the inquiry-based curriculum is normalizing non-closure in math classrooms. With inquiry, it may take multiple days to discover one concept, and the lesson isn't just about the correct answer but also the meaning of the answer and the process.
Why do you teach? What do you like about being a teacher?
I teach, specifically math, because I want to be the math teacher I wish I had when I was in middle school. I love all of the questions that middle schoolers ask and how they push me to think differently than the norm.
Tell us about a time you found your job especially rewarding.
I find my job rewarding when students come back the next day and say they have deeper wonderings and questions from the day before, because it means they are thinking outside of the classroom and that brings me joy.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I love reading and finding a sunny spot in the park to spend my time.
