Science Teacher
Know Your Pelicans
What do you teach? What is one of your favorite parts of the curriculum?
I currently teach 5th and 6th grade science. One of my favorite parts of each grade's curriculum is how the majority of lessons are hands-on, or involve modeling and demonstrations. Students are truly able to not only grasp the content but bring out their creative side when interpreting their work.
What is something that most Packer people wouldn't know about you?
I have an entire room in my apartment dedicated to Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is filled with over 200 action figures that range from $20 dollars to $900 dollars.
What are the strengths of your department?
Everyone in the science department has a passion for the sciences, and each teacher has expertise in a specific branch of the sciences. Whether it's physics, chemistry or biology, there is always someone you can go to for ideas or clarification of the content. Teachers are also always willing to share and provide resources. The collaboration has been amazing to see and experience.
What are your impressions of Packer so far? Our students? Your colleagues?
My impression of Packer is that it is a place that is welcoming, accepting and challenging, in a good way. Students are hard working, dedicated and thankful for the great education they are receiving. My colleagues have made my transition to Packer an easy one. They are kind, smart, and always willing to help with anything and answer any question I may have.
Besides your subject, what's something you hope to teach your students?
I hope to teach them to trust themselves and the work they complete. My students are some of the brightest kids I have ever taught — I don't think many believe that, because they are worried and stressed about getting the correct answer when they already have it.
Tell us about a time you learned something from our students.
Honestly, almost every day. I am impressed by how much knowledge they possess at such a young age. Many are also very self-aware, something I was not at their age.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I would want the ability to breathe underwater. I love the ocean and marine animals and it would be amazing to just be able to swim with them and explore the oceans without worrying about running out of air.
