Middle School Learning Specialist
Know Your Pelicans
What do you teach? What is one of your favorite parts of the curriculum?
I’m a Middle School Learning Specialist. I love tests and projects in any class–getting to help students understand what’s expected and how to do their best work feels productive and exciting.
Besides your subject, what’s something you hope to teach your students?
I hope to teach students that curiosity about the world and about other people is a great way—or maybe the only way—to develop empathy and love of learning.
What is something that most Packer people wouldn't know about you?
I started teaching when I was 22, but before that, had lots of jobs–picking blueberries and strawberries commercially when I was eleven, running criminal background checks on foster and adoptive parent applicants for the State of Oregon’s Child Protective Services, making pizza and lasagna at a restaurant, driving a tractor on an iris farm, being a caterer, working in a café, staffing a search for a school superintendent in Rhode Island, and being a cook for an archaeological dig in Sicily, among others. I love to work!
What is your favorite space on campus and why?
I love the Shen Gallery because it’s such a treat to have all sorts of art exhibited just steps from my desk, all year. It’s a wonderful teaching resource and a huge asset to the community. I learn something from every exhibit.
