Know Your Pelicans

Meet Jamie Lilly

Lower School Literacy Coordinator

Know Your Pelicans

What do you teach? What is one of your favorite parts of the curriculum?

I am the Literacy Coordinator in the Lower School. I love the daily conversations that I have with teachers about reading and writing instruction. Whether it be one on one or in a group setting, I always walk away from these conversations having learned more.

Besides your subject, what’s something you hope to teach your students?

It is essential that we teach students to understand different perspectives. Reading is a great way to facilitate this because books can serve as mirrors and windows. When children read a variety of books, they can see themselves reflected in some stories, while other books allow them to get closer to understanding the perspective of someone whose experience is different from their own. I like to think of empathy as a positive side effect of quality reading instruction.

What’s one thing you love about your colleagues?

As Literacy Coordinator, I have the honor of working with an incredibly thoughtful and dedicated group of teachers. Each educator brings their own perspective to how we can improve the reading and writing experiences for students in the Pre and Lower School. I am truly surrounded by lifelong learners!
