Second Grade Teacher
Know Your Pelicans
What do you teach? What is one of your favorite parts of the curriculum?
I teach 2nd Grade. The most transformative aspect of our reading curriculum is teaching students that once they have mastered lifting words off a page to read, they can now begin reading to learn. This leap always marks a milestone in a student’s learning journey, as they learn to notice and discuss plot, character, mood and tone. Their noticings never fail to remind me of the magical way 2nd Graders view the world.
Besides your subject, what’s something you hope to teach your students?
Building a happy classroom community in which we can laugh, share our struggles, and enjoy each other’s successes is paramount. Teaching my students to value each other and celebrate kindness is something I hope stays with my students forever.
What’s one thing you love about your colleagues?
My colleagues’ dedication and thoughtfulness inspire me every day, and encourage me to be a better learner, listener and teacher.
If you had an inspirational fridge magnet (and we’re not saying you would), what would it say and why?
