Mathematics Department Head
Know Your Pelicans
What do you teach? What is one of your favorite parts of the curriculum?
I teach Middle and Upper School mathematics. In the middle school, my favorite topic is number theory, and in the upper school, I love teaching combinatorics. Both of those topics involve tons of problems that feel like puzzles and that can be creatively solved in many different ways.
What is something that most Packer people wouldn't know about you?
I love to cook, and I collect cookbooks. Even though my job and my two young kids keep me very busy, I still often make fairly elaborate meals during the week. If I feel exhausted or that my teaching was just “meh” one day, making a great dinner lets me end the day feeling like a success!
What’s one thing you love about your colleagues?
I love working with the math department members. It’s an honor to teach alongside people who are so committed to their students’ learning, who love math so much, and who are so passionate about developing their teaching craft.
If you had an inspirational fridge magnet (and we’re not saying you would), what would it say and why?
“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.” - Henry James
I can’t think of a better reminder to start each day.
