April 29-30, 2011
A fun-filled weekend of parties, presentations, and programs, this year’s Reunion was a great success.
Friday afternoon began with a chance for alumni to visit classes. The evening concluded with alumni, faculty, and trustees gathering for a cocktail reception in the Blackburne Library.
The following morning featured a reception for all alumni classes and tours of the school’s campus. Alumni and their guests enjoyed presentations by current Packer students and faculty, including a dynamic lecture by Latin teacher Tim Flannery, entitled “Semper Ubi Sub Ubi,” and a demonstration by students on Packer’s prize-winning robotics team. Former faculty member Jane Rinden welcomed visitors to “Loose Geometry,” an exhibit in the Carl Shen Gallery honoring the work of her late husband, Thor Rinden.
Saturday’s Chapel featured two special awards:
At the annual meeting of the Alumni Association, Abigail Hooper ’96 presented the Alumni Plate (the award for the class with the most members in attendance) to the Class of 2001, celebrating their 10th Reunion. Alan Cooper ’01 accepted the award on behalf of his class.
The Class of 1941, celebrating their 70th Reunion, earned the Champagne Challenge Cup for the highest percentage of participation (50%) in Packer Annual Giving. Edith Burns Henderson ’41 and Eunice Krause Rischan ’41, reunion co-chairs, accepted the award on behalf of their class.
As the Alumni Board is committed to increasing alumni participation in Annual Giving from the current 18% to 25%, Abigail Hooper ’96 congratulated the 28 alumni classes who have already met or exceeded the 25% goal. “Annual Giving supports every program, every teacher, every student, every year,” Abigail said. “Top-quality education is expensive, and the money raised by Annual Giving is key to Packer’s ability to provide the very best for today’s students.”
During the annual meeting, the Alumni Association elected two new board members, Sasha Baumrind ’00 and Rebecca Chovnick ’02.
Gathered alumni then honored Packer’s two retiring faculty members, Judy Jones, head librarian, and Elizabeth Nilsen-Doble, 6th Grade science teacher.
A luncheon in the Packer Commons and the Belle Alenick Baier Atrium concluded the weekend’s festivities. Attendees gathered during the luncheon for their official class photos.
