Fifty-two Packer Middle and Upper School students have been recognized with a record 103 New York City Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in 2013. The regional awards are chosen by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers and sponsored by Scholastic, Inc. They recognize the best works in the visual and literary arts from students in grades 7–12 throughout New York City.
In the visual arts categories, 22 Packer students earned 50 awards. These included 12 Gold Key, 16 Silver Key, and 22 Honorable Mention awards.
In addition, 33 Packer students earned 53 awards in writing, including 9 Gold Key, 19 Silver Key, and 25 Honorable Mention awards.
Special recognition goes to Anisha BharathSingh '13, Grace Geracioti '13, Mac Schumer '13, who each earned Honorable Mention for their art portfolio submissions.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates. The Alliance presents over $250,000 annually in awards and scholarships to top winners of the Awards and their teachers. Gold Key recipients will have their work advanced for consideration at the national level.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards continue to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the US, and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.
