School Profile for 2016-17 (PDF)
The college counseling program at Packer is highly individualized and works with students to find appropriate matches and make informed, responsible decisions about their college destinations. The college counselors are responsible for counseling and advising students in grades nine through twelve on all aspects of the college admissions process. The college counseling process at Packer is a partnership among students, parents, teachers, advisors, and the college counselors. Extensive communication among all partners is a fundamental component of the process, and students and parents are encouraged and expected to meet with the college counselors on a regular basis from the spring of eleventh grade until the spring of the twelfth grade year.
The college counselors meet and communicate periodically with ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders and their parents about topics and preparation activities relevant to the college admissions process. Early in the second semester of the junior year, students and their parents receive a comprehensive manual including advice and instructions on how to proceed with all aspects of the college search, application, and selection process. Juniors participate in a six-to-eight week college counseling seminar that acquaints them with the tasks and timeline required for conducting a thorough college search and provides detailed advice and instructions on preparing and submitting college applications. Each fall, representatives from over ninety colleges and universities visit Packer to talk with seniors. Individual and group meetings with the college counselors continue throughout the school year until students make their final college choices.
