Welcome from the
Head of School
Now in its 170th year in historic Brooklyn Heights, The Packer Collegiate Institute is exceptionally proud of the outstanding education we offer to children from three years of age through high school. With the conversion of the contiguous St. Ann's Church into a stunning Middle School
for students in Grades 5 through 8, and complete renovations of the Lower School, the Science Building, and most Upper School classrooms, Packer comfortably accommodates its 1028 students in a campus that is beautiful, historical, and fully modernized
. And beginning in the fall of 2017, the Preschool and Kindergarten classes will move to a state-of-the-art building designed specifically for our youngest learners, one short block from Joralemon Street at 100 Clinton Street.
Of course, a great school is more than an excellent curriculum and wonderful buildings! Packer has become the school of choice for so many families in Brooklyn and Manhattan primarily because of its extraordinary faculty
of talented men and women who bring a wealth of expertise into the classroom, along with a real love of young people. In addition, parents
tell us over and over that they were drawn to Packer because of the sense of values our school reflects and instills in our children. At its core, Packer is a truly caring community where adults model for students the attributes we prize—kindness, honor, intelligence, inclusiveness, and diversity
. Learning at Packer is a shared adventure, fueled by the energy of our children and their teachers in an environment one must experience to comprehend. Those who visit us and meet our boys and girls are immediately struck by how articulate, smart, welcoming, and charming they are; by how comfortable they are around adults; and by how engaged they are in the joy of learning.
Our Lower School
stresses the fundamentals of literacy and mathematics in a joyful, student-focused environment, with ample time built in for social studies, science, art, music, library studies, dance, and physical education. Our classrooms each have in-class libraries, current curricular materials, modern technology, and a wonderfully trained and experienced senior and assistant teacher. Beginning in grade 5, our children participate in a school-wide laptop program
, with each youngster utilizing his or her own computer, working in classrooms equipped with smart boards and other multi-media, so that technology
is truly integrated as a daily part of everyone’s education.
Most Packer students begin to learn a foreign language in Grade 6, and continue their study through Upper School. Currently, we offer study in French, Spanish, Latin, and Mandarin Chinese. As youngsters continue through the Upper School
, they encounter a rigorous and exciting program of required and elective offerings, including sixteen different advanced placement courses for which college credit may be earned. Modern science laboratories, gymnasia, a theater, and art, dance, and music
studios serve as ideal venues for beginning and advanced study in these areas. Opportunities also abound for young men and women to participate in competitive interscholastic athletics
at both the varsity and junior varsity levels, as well as in a broad array of student clubs and activities.
This website offers but a glimpse into the highlights of the full Packer experience. Please call us with your questions
or to arrange a visit to our campus
, where you can tour our school and meet with administrators and faculty who can provide you with additional information.
