Upper School Anti-Bias Lesson
Sarah Strauss,
Upper School history teacher, engaged her AP US History students in a
critical analysis of their textbook for bias in one lesson. She had
her class assess a passage about black-owned slaves in their textbook,
and she asked them to brainstorm information that the passage did not
include. She then presented a passage on the same topic, written by a
renowned African American scholar and asked her students to compare and
contrast the two accounts. Her students were able to critically
consider perspective and question the overly simplistic and subtly
racist assumptions in the textbook.
