May Day Arts Festival 2010
Celebrating Nature
through Art, Music, and Dance
May 7, 2010
Following the traditional Maypole Celebration (performed in
two groups by the 6th Grade), the May Day Arts Festival featured themes of nature — in performances and artwork by children in Kindergarten through 4th Grade.
Singers from the 3rd and 4th Grade performed songs evoking the natural world such as "Turn the World Around," "The Wind" and "The Mist Covered Mountain." The 4th Grade also pleased the crowd with a spirited rendition of the 1980s pop hit "Africa" by Toto.
Children in Kindergarten, Jr. 1st, and 1st Grade performed dances that combined individual expression with group choreography, while the 2nd Grade channeled Gene Kelly "Dancin' in the Rain," complete with multi-colored parasols.
In what has become a May Day tradition, the entire Lower School began the celebration by singing the Ndonyo Wasin School Song, in honor of Packer's sister school in Kenya. They concluded with another tradition: "Siyahamba; We Are Marching," a South African freedom song.
After the performance, parents and
guests could view student artwork in Packer’s hallways.
